Can a defence product be codified in several categories at once?

May 19, 2026, 10:59

Take, for example, a robotic system designed for logistics, medical evacuation, and as a platform for combat modules. It will be codified as an unmanned ground vehicle.

  • If these functions are performed without altering the design, it is treated as one product with several applications (purposes).
  • If design changes are required, then it is considered one product with different variants.

In other words, the technical specifications remain the same, but the variants differ – for instance, one version may be fitted with a winch, another with a mine-clearing plough. In such cases, a separate NATO Stock Number (NSN) may be assigned to each variant.

Reminder: sample documents, clarifications, and the full algorithm for amending technical specifications are available in the Arsenal section of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine’s website, as well as on the Window for Defence Manufacturers portal.
