The profession for those who see further than the horizon
Reconnaissance UAV operators remotely pilot reconnaissance drones, working under the motto: “We see you – and we will destroy you.” Classified under military speciality code VOS 216, their mission is to conduct deep reconnaissance, identify enemy positions, monitor hostile logistics routes, and gather data from deep inside enemy defences.
Operating at a safer distance from the frontline, the operator’s drone penetrates far into hostile airspace, returning with intelligence that can change the outcome of combat operations. Their influence lies not in direct firepower, but in the reconnaissance data that underpins commanders’ decisions.
An Arsenal of Proven Systems
Ukrainian reconnaissance crews today command a formidable arsenal. Battle-tested domestic designs form the backbone: Leleka-100, SHARK, the multi-purpose PD-2 and Raybird-3, as well as Furia and Valkyrie. These systems excel in complex electronic warfare environments, conducting deep reconnaissance and delivering high-quality optical imagery from altitude.
Alongside them, the Defence Forces also deploy advanced foreign reconnaissance systems, including PUMA-LE, FlyEye 3.0, and Poseidon.
Equipment and Crew Kit
The reconnaissance UAV operator’s workplace is a modern, high-tech hub. It includes a ground control station, an aircraft equipped with a powerful electro-optical observation system, antennas, and data transmission tools. For mission planning, coordinate mapping, and data decryption, crews rely on secure laptops or tablets with specialised software.
For personal safety, operators carry standard firearms for self-defence and to secure launch positions. Crews may also be equipped with 12-gauge shotguns to counter enemy FPV drones attempting to attack their teams.
Multi-Level Training
The path to this high-tech profession involves several stages:
- Basic military training: covering tactics, weapons, engineering, topography, tactical medicine, and communications.
- Specialist training: learning the technical characteristics of fixed-wing UAVs, flight planning, navigation systems, and ground control stations. Particular emphasis is placed on video-stream decryption and operating under active enemy electronic warfare.
- Unit integration: once assigned to a military unit, crews practise coordination and begin executing combat missions.
